assignment 5, my thesis, any feedback would help:)

essay 1

A View of the Other Side
The grass is always greener on the other side.  Many hear this cliché, but do we ever truly see this as an image presented before us.  How do we put an image to a concept that seems to be saying that we can always have something better?  After viewing pictures by Rhea Garen and Joel Meyerowitz of the J. Paul Getty Museum exhibit Where We Live: Photographs of America from the Berman Collection and a picture from Clairibel Ruiz's blog, it is clear that we can put an image to the ever present cliché.  These images seem to reveal to their viewers more about the photographer's experiences and wishes, than simply providing a beautiful image.  For this reason, one can better appreciate the artistic details of the photographs.  These three photographers' provide images that have similar ways of revealing their experiences and wishes, but they each have a unique “other side" Which makes them extraordinary.

  1. Aman,

Good start. I like the metaphor of the "other side." You can use that with the camera (photographer / subject) or with a photograph (image / person looking at the image). My suggestion would be to eliminate the "experiences" and focus on the "wishes" and how we can "read" photographs to see the photographer's (and our own) wishes, desires, and needs. Good work.

  2. Aman, I think you’re off to a good start with your introduction. Your thesis statement is great in the way that it explains that your essay will discuss the similarities and differences between the photos. I just have a question, so when you say “it is clear that we can put an image to the ever present cliché,” does that mean that these three photos do provide evidence that we can always have something better?

  4. Amandeep,

Your off to a good start, but I may be confused about your thesis just a little. Will you be focusing on how photographers present their work to viewers or trying to explain the hidden message behind the 3 pics u have chosen? Maybe your thesis is that there is simply more to a image than the texture or color involved in photographs. For instance when you said, "For this reason, one can better appreciate the artistic details of the photographs" you could use words such as texture, lines, shades, light, and even colors to explain the differences or similarities between the images when writing your essay.

Hope my feedback was some what helpful.

  5. Amandeep,

I like your statement that reads "these images seem to reveal to their viewers more about...wishes than simply providing a beautiful image." I would just leave out the "to their viewrs" part and continue to argue that photographs are more than just images.
